Safety on Pennsylvania Rivers

Here are some tips for PA river safety:

Plan your trip.

Before you go, research the river you'll be kayaking on and make sure it's appropriate for your skill level. Consider the water level, current, and hazards such as rapids, rocks, and dams.

Wear a life jacket.

This is the most important safety tip for kayaking. Even if you're a strong swimmer, a life jacket can save your life if you capsize.

Tell someone where you're going.

Let a friend or family member know where you're going and when you expect to be back. This way, if you don't return on time, someone will know to look for you.

Check the weather forecast.

Don't go kayaking if there's a chance of bad weather. High winds, rain, and thunderstorms can make kayaking dangerous.

Bring the right gear.

In addition to a life jacket, you should also bring a first aid kit, a whistle, and a waterproof map of the river.
Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to the water level, current, and other hazards. Be especially careful in areas with rapids or rocks.

Paddle within your limits.

If you're not a confident kayaker, don't attempt to kayak on a river that's too challenging. Start with a calm river and work your way up to more challenging rivers as you gain experience.

Be prepared to capsize.

Even the best kayakers capsize from time to time. If you do capsize, stay calm and try to right your kayak. If you can't right your kayak, stay afloat and signal for help.

By following these safety tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable kayaking experience.

Here are some additional tips that may be helpful for river safety in a kayak:

Dress for the weather.

Wear layers of clothing so you can adjust your temperature as needed. Avoid cotton clothing, as it will get heavy when wet.

Take breaks often.

Kayaking can be tiring, so it's important to take breaks to rest and refuel.
Be aware of wildlife. Rivers are home to a variety of wildlife, including animals that can be dangerous. Be especially careful of snakes, beavers, and alligators (well maybe not alligators in Western Pennsylvania).

Have fun! Kayaking is a great way to enjoy the outdoors.
Relax, enjoy the scenery, and take your time.
